A day meant to honor fallen heroes turned tragic in the city of Green when 13-year-old Matthew Schultz of North Canton lost his life during the annual Memorial Day parade.
The heartbreaking incident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 26, as crowds gathered along the parade route. According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Department, Matthew was riding atop a parade float trailer being pulled by a pickup truck when he fell from the front of the trailer. In a devastating moment, he was struck by the trailer’s wheels.
Emergency responders from Green Fire Department, who were present at the parade, rushed to assist. Matthew was transported to a hospital in Akron, but was sadly pronounced dead shortly after noon.
On Tuesday morning, the Summit County Medical Examiner officially identified the young victim as Matthew Schultz, a beloved student at North Canton City Schools.
“This is a tragedy that cuts deeply through our entire community,” a statement from the school district read. “Matthew was a bright young student, and we are providing counselors and support to all students and staff affected by this loss.”
Matthew was more than a student—he was also a dedicated altar server at Christ the Servant Parish in North Canton. In a moving tribute, church member Michael L. Reed wrote on Facebook:
“Please pray for the family of 13-year-old Matthew Schultz who lost his life in a tragic accident. Matthew was a special young man who loved attending church and serving the Lord. A 13-year-old inspiration to all who knew him.”
The Summit Metro Crash Response Team, which includes officers from agencies across the county, is now leading the investigation into how this tragic accident happened.
Memorial Day parades are meant to be peaceful, patriotic gatherings to remember those who gave their lives for the country. But in the wake of Monday’s accident, the city of Green and the greater Stark and Summit County communities are now mourning one of their own.
Matthew’s friends, classmates, and church family remember him as a kind, faithful, and enthusiastic boy who brought joy wherever he went. He is survived by his grieving parents, siblings, extended family, and a heartbroken community.
Plans for a public vigil or memorial service are expected to be announced soon.
